BIO
Alexander Abdukarimov (b. 1986, Russia) is a choreographer, ballet dancer, and the Founder & Artistic Director of Berlin Ballet Company.
From 1995 to 1998, he trained in acrobatics at an Olympic Reserve school. He became a two-time Moscow champion and earned the title of Candidate for Master of Sport. In 2001, he began studying ballet in a small amateur group at a music school. Within a year, he made a clear decision to pursue dance professionally.
He graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Ballet Art and qualification as a ballet dancer.
His professional career began at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he performed several solo roles within his first season. After one year, he returned to Moscow, toured extensively, and later moved to Europe to join Víctor Ullate Ballet in Madrid. There, he encountered a wide range of contemporary European choreographic approaches and styles.
In 2012–2013, while working with Ballet Kiel, Abdukarimov began developing his voice as a choreographer and created two short ballets for the company: “Chronos” and “When the Masks Fall.” Since 2014, he has been a member of Staatsballett Berlin.
His first premieres in Berlin followed in 2015: the short ballet “Drops” (Tischlerei DO) and “Look Out of the Silence”for a gala at the Russian House in Berlin. In the 2016–2017 season, he created “Children of the Night” for the Kyiv National Opera.
In 2019–2020, he staged the show “Fly Above the Abyss” at the Moscow Musical Theatre and premiered “Deus ex Machina” (a reflection on early AI ideas) with Ksenia Ovsyanick for a gala at Theatre Dortmund. Since then, his work has increasingly explored generative technologies and data-transfer concepts in dialogue with human movement. In October 2020, together with Aubert Vanderlinden, he presented “Control_Shift” at Komische Oper Berlin.
Recent creations include “The Curlique of the Path” with Arshak Ghalumyan for the Jewish Culture Festival Berlin (September 2023), “Swan Lake — Room Version” (Bonn, December 2023), “Shadow of the Bluebeard” (Theatre Gera, March 2024), “Techno Ballet Odyssey” to original music by Marco Nastic (May 2024), and “Glam & Resistance” at Atelier Gardens (12 June 2025).
